In the world of group fitness, cueing is the unsung hero that transforms a good class into a great one. This is especially true in choreographed formats like bungee fitness, where timing, rhythm, and clear instruction are essential for safety, enjoyment, and participant success. Whether you’re a fitness instructor looking to enhance your teaching skills or a studio owner seeking to elevate your classes, understanding the art of cueing and choreography is crucial.

Why Is Cueing So Important in Fitness?

Regardless of the level you are teaching, cueing is a foundational skill that must be developed before leading any fitness class. Cueing:

  • Guides Participants to Success: Effective cueing helps participants anticipate movements, follow routines, and feel successful, even if they’ve never danced or exercised before.

  • Prevents Injury: Clear, timely cues ensure that everyone moves safely and correctly, reducing the risk of injury.

  • Enhances Engagement: Good cueing brings engagement between you and the participants. It can allow you to interact with them more, get them to woo or clap when you say things like "get low", "engage your core", or "feel the burn." This helps them understand not only the things they are doing, but feeling.

  • Builds Confidence: When participants can follow along easily, they gain confidence and are more likely to return.

Cueing in Choreographed Bungee Fitness

Choreographed bungee fitness classes are unique. They combine elements of dance, music, and athleticism, all while participants are suspended in the bungees. Cueing in choreographed classes requires a higher level of skill, as it calls on a person's musicality. For instructors, this is where you learn whether or not you have strong musicality. Understanding basic counts in dance and following beat and rhythm are necessary in the style of bungee classes we teach and train in. Although not everyone has a dance or music background, this skill can be developed over time, and there are many ways that we can help you learn this. Most people, whether they know it or not, can feel the beat, even if they don't realize it. Tapping your foot to a song, clapping with a crowd at a concert, even predicting what is coming next in a song you've never heard before are all skills and traits that are learned from listening to hundreds of thousands of hours of music. When it comes to fitness and choreography, the first fitness class you might think of is Zumba or, if you go back further, Jazzercise! These two fitness formats are amazing at a couple of things. One: Getting someone who's never danced a day in their life to anticipate and follow a routine they've never done before, and two: Bringing enjoyment to movement. Jazzercise uses rhythmic cueing or "sing-song" language when they are calling out the exercises. Zumba uses more physical and visual cueing.

No matter the format, cueing requires you to call out or signal movements before they happen. Just like a GPS, if it tells you to exit right as you're passing the exit, you're gonna miss it; if it tells you to exit two miles ahead of when you need to, you'll be taking the exit too early. This is exactly how cueing works. You are their guide and navigation in class. How Zumba gets people to catch on so quickly is how they use physical and visual cueing techniques, along with using repetition of movements by following the basic song structure (Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Bridge, Chorus). This structure can be broken down further, and some songs can be far more complicated in structure than others. At Launch Bungee Fitness, our certification and training program breaks down these musical structures and teaches instructors how to cue effectively, ensuring every class is both safe and exhilarating.
